Converting MBG 8.0 to vMBG

I thought I could find this on MOL but for some reason I can't.
I then thought I remembered in the training docs but now I can't get on the training site.

Has anyone got a doc that explains the process of converting MBG standalone to a vMBG?

You'll have to get all your licenses transferred over to a vMBG product in AMC.

It's a free license to go from physical to virtual.
Back it up. Install ova file in VMware. Start vm. Second question is. " restore from back up". Choose restore from network.

you can add a vm license separately.... I should have know that..

you need to reset your footprint, it'll change.

are you re-deploying with the same ip addresses?

I've taken a quick look through the release notes and guides and can not see a step by step guide.

I have done this myself a few times.

In simple terms you back up the physical and restore to the virtual using the same procedure as if you were changing a physical server after failure

If you are keeping everything the same, server gateway, IP's, then there should be no more to it.

One extra step you will have is restoring from network. As the machine is virtual it has no USB ports.
Arguably you could use a CD in the VMWARE host but i find the network restore option works fine.

Restore from backup:

When the system prompts you with "Do you wish to restore from backup?", click Yes.
a.
Select Restore from Network Server.
b.
You will be prompted to select a network interface to use for the restore (LAN or WAN), the address and netmask of the local MSL server, the address, gateway and domain name of the backup server, the folder name containing the backup file, and the username and password required to log in to the backup server.


If you are changing to or from "server-gateway" to "server only" that makes it more difficult.

Yep it's a pretty straight forward process as mentioned. Just make sure you apple the physical to virtual part, and reset the arid, and then a simple backup and restore should do the trick.
With the new MSL versions you are able to fire up the new machine and point it at the old physical host and it will say in to it, create a backup, and then restore it to itself. One it knows the backup has been taken it shuts down the old host and starts the restore.
I have only tried this once though, and it failed, so not sure how reliable it is yet.

Just make sure you have your virtual nics configured correctly on the vm host as well!
