You need a physical serial port... either built in your laptop (extremely rare now days) or via USB. If you are going to get one, this only needs a cheap one but I recommend investing in a Digi Edgeport/1 USB device if you will be doing much with things like routers or older telecom equipment as it can map itself to COM1/2 necessary with some older software. Other than that, your software is not really relevant, as long as it support a basic terminal. The display needed by the 3300 doesn't need to be anything special, but we typically use TeraTerm for everything RS232 related.
