Push branding to all extensions?
« on: August 27, 2018, 11:45:45 AM »
Our Mitel VAR gave me a copy of the HTML app developer kit, and I've used it to created branding applications and screensavers for our 53xx phones.

I've uploaded them to the 3300 using the Phone Applications Update form, and I can apply them to phones one extension at a time from the User and Device Configuration form, but I've got a LOT of extensions. Is there a way to push the branding to all supported phones in one shot?

I tried naming the branding apps following the same convention as naming the branding graphics for the 6900 series phones, but the 53xx's don't seem to be grabbing the content automatically. I would really love to not set this manually for each or 500 extensions.

Could you export data, modify and then re-import.

You may also have to run a HTMLAPPUPGRADE from the maintenance commands.

I had considered doing an export/modify/import, but I've never done one on that scale and I was hoping someone else had done it before I went full guinea pig.

HTMLAPPUPGRADE doesn't seem to have any impact.

What version software are you on?
HTMLAPPUPGRADE was only introduced on MCD 7.0 SP2

Side note: When I say that running HTMLAPPUPGRADE has no impact, I just mean that it doesn't have any apparent impact on the phones, not that it fails.

On the maintenance commands screen it returns "HTMLAPPUPGRADE command sent successfully" or something to that effect, but no other return.

I'm starting to think that the HTMLAPPUPGRADE command might do what I want, but only if I could use it correctly.

I've been uploading the apps I built to the PBX using the 'Phone Applications Upgrade' form that they added in 8.0, and from there it seems pretty clear that there is no way to get them onto individual sets other than one at a time. However, the HTML dev kit came with an uploader as well.

From the nearly non-existent documentation I've seen on HTMLAPPUPGRADE it looks like running this command after uploading the apps using the app uploader does push it out to the phones, but I get an error every time I try to use it. Specifically:

Code: [Select]
Failed to get one use username and password for switch SMC_Admin
ERROR One time username failed on switch SMC_Admin
Uploading finished

When I looked that error up in the documentation, it says that this means it was able to contact the controller, but it's not a 3300ICP. Of course, it IS a 3300, and I'm pretty sure it's an ICP.

Looking through old issues, I remembered how terrible all of the Mitel desktop tools are with their bundled java versions when you try to run them from a modern OS.

So, I fired up Windows XP and got a totally different error from the uploader:

Code: [Select]
ERROR IOException: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?): connect
ERROR Cannot connect to switch 172.21.100.2
ERROR Error for switch 172.21.100.2: Error
Finished

Any thoughts?

Nevermind on that last idea. Looks like that was just because I didn't have the mitel root cert installed on my XP VM. Once I installed the root cert I just get the same error as I do on 10 or 7.

Not sure I can help much further.

I believe even if you upload the screensaver you still have to activate it at the handset itself anyway via the settings.

all 53xx series branding and apps requires that they are assigned to the users and or devices

they dont auto populate like 69xx series

you can however have different settings per phone

I had considered doing an export/modify/import, but I've never done one on that scale and I was hoping someone else had done it before I went full guinea pig.

I did about 370 using the export and import method without issues
but some people do report issues with importing on the User and Services Configuration form, so I would recommend doing your own risk assessment, at the very least make a system backup first

You could break down the import sheet to a smaller number (eg 100 at a time) if it makes you feel more comfortable
