How do I use port mirroring on the IP phones?
« on: July 06, 2016, 03:06:37 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to troubleshoot connectivity issue between the phone and the PC.  The phone never loses connection to the network.  The display remains, and you can make incoming/outgoing calls.

Once in a while though, the PC connected to the phone loses network connection.  The applications running (ie.  Outlook) get sluggish, then stop responding.  When I run ipconfig, I see that it's lost its IP address.  Rebooting the PC, then the phone, or vice versa reinstates the network connection of the PC.

The PC is a running Windows 7 connected to a 5330e phone.

Now my question is, can I use port mirroring on the IP phone to capture disconnects?

Thanks ralph! I was able to run port mirroring and see UDP packets in Wireshark.  It was neat to see the digits I dialed.

I had the exact same issue happen to my PC this morning.  My phone was up, but my PC had no network connection but had an IP address.

Out of curiosity, I tried to enable port mirroring on my phone and it said "PC port down! No changes made."

Has anyone seen this before? Could it be possible that the PC network issues I'm having is caused by the PC port of the 5330 phone?

It could be a defective port.
You may want to swap the phone out to see if that makes a difference.

It could also be defective cabling.
I usually confirm/deny faulty cabling if I nail the switchport to 100Mb (might have to manually configure the phone the same) and the errors go away.
