PRI with different area codes
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:52:30 PM »
We have our corp office in Florida, and a satellite office in N.C. and OK.
I have asked our phone carrier if we could get a single line added to the PRI with an area code from one of the remote offices.
Something like what Vonage does when you port your number.

Nuvox says no way, this is not possible, has anyone heard of this being possible. The idea is the military base employees, can only call local numbers, and calling Florida is LD.
So if we had a OK, and a N.C. number on the PRI, then this would solve the problem.

I agree with the carrier.   Not on a PRI.   Perhaps using a SIP carrier.
You could use Skype with Skypin and a product called "Vosky" to do bring it into your PBX.   Or perhaps use a vonange line to bring in an analog line - but this might violate terms of service.

Another option would be to buy an analog line from a local provider in OK and one in NC and just call forward those lines to a DID on your PRI.

I have done this in the past there is a service called FX or foreign exchange.

Its expensive and I have only done this within the same state so I dont know if it would work intrastate or not.

Could you put a small 3300 controller at the remote sites and do IP trunking?

I've never seen an FX on a PRI.  Usually just analog lines.  You're sure right about being expensive, though.   The cost of one could pay for a 3300 with IP trunking within a few months.    Within the last few days we had a carrier forward two remote numbers from another city to DIDs at our main office.   Works good for providing local numbers for customers.   Not so good for outbound caller ID.
I'd prefer SIP trunks directly into the 3300.  We'll be converting these lines shortly I think.

I agree with Ralph, don't know much about US Telco carriers but in the UK this is not possible on PRI, but can be achieved through SIP.

Another assertion that you cannot do it on a PRI. I have a DS3 with SIP trunks and our carrier Paetec give use virtual telepone numbers from any area code on those SIP trunks. IN some cases I have done the RCF, but that can get expensive fast. Especially if that LD rate is high.

We just started using this solution and I plan to use it more across the country by deploying IP phones to small offices.

OPT for a single virtual number and a IP PBX solution should be able to have calls forwarded from this one virtual number to all these three locations as you may need. You have a monthly payment for the number and IP PBX service and the call forwarding rates are much affordable as i see in www.virtualglobalphone.com

I've done this also with Phone Booth.   It's free for less than 200 minutes.
