Software installer tool
« on: September 22, 2009, 08:07:20 AM »
Not being a field tech, I have a question.
When using the software installer tool, does the laptop it runs on require internet access or is it just the 3300?

I had a tech stop an upgrade lastnight because the SI tool couldn't talk to the AMC but the 3300 could ping ok.

2nd part of that question: what ports need to be open on the firewall to talk to the AMC?   21,22,80, 443?

Hi Ralph,

When using the SI tool to upgrade/license its the PC running it that needs to be able to access the amc no the 3300. However a little trick that I have used in the past if the network you are connected to does not have internet access is to start the SI tool fill in the details (upgrade/full install etc) then at the point where it asks you about licensing info (app record number of options & password) you can actually disconnect from the LAN with the 3300 (voice LAN) and connect to another LAN (say a data LAN) sync the PC with the AMC and the connect back to the voice LAN and contiunue the upgrade.

As for Port numbers the SI tool will use 22 to connect to register.mitel-amc.com

The 3300 will use port 443 to sync with the AMC

Thats what I thought.
I wonder (out loud) if it would be possible to use the 3300 for routing.   i.e. use the 3300 as the default gateway for the laptop.
dunno about that.  Might be worth an experiment.

I dunno about the specifics of the network you are on. What I have found in the past is that if you need the 3300 to have internet access to sync with AMC but it doesnt have permanent internet access you can set the 3300's gateway as the WAN port and plug the WAN into a data LAN, sync then unplug again.

The 3300 could get to the AMC.  The laptop couldn't.
Network is set up so that everything is locked down only giving specific devices outbound internet access.
Originally I had the network people open up ports to the AMC from the 3300, not knowing at the laptop also required access.
Told the tech he should have just downloaded the licesnes but I don't think he could have gotten them either.

I never use the internet to validate the license / options.  Just don't put anything in the AMC record field, and manually type in your options password, after filling in / checking off all of the options paid for.

The problem with manually entering the license code is the licenses are then locked to that system id.

v2win,
Do you know if it's possible to use the 3300 as a router?
If the 3300 has outbound firewall access to the internet, could you set your default gateway to the 3300 and then get out from there?

You can use the WAN port on the 3300 for Internet access but not the 3300 itself as a gateway if it is allowed through the firewall by some ACL.
