Upgrading from MCD 4.2 SP2 to 6.0
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:05:38 AM »
Hi,

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere. We intend to upgrade 5 controllers from MCD 4.2 sp2 to MCD 6.0. These controllers are in a cluster. The reason for this upgrade is because we want to deploy UC360 Audio conferencing equipment on 3 sites and its my understanding that the UC360 will only work on MCD 5.0 and above.

Does anyone have a quick reference guide on how to do this? Will I have to upgrade to MCD 5.0 then to MCD 6.0?

Thanks.
Steve.

Hi Steve,
You can just go straight from 4.2 to 6 without having to go to 5 in between.

Hi Martyn,

Is this via the software installer tool?

You would have GDM if you are 4.2 so you are pretty well good to go. The only thing to check is the MCD 6 release notes to see what levels any applications need to be to run with MCD6. i.e there are Nupoint, UCA, MAS, Prairie Fyre loads that work best with MCD 6. People sometimes forget that applicatons often also need an upgrade when a MCD upgrade is done. 5550 IP Console also needs to be updated.

Thanks LoopyLou,

Will I need to update the 5550 IP consoles if I upgrade to MCD 5.0 sp2? I'm kinda avoiding to update the consoles as thy have 2 consoles which are quite a distance apart.

Cheers!

Every software load includes a console load to use with it. You should always run the load that comes from with the software you are upgrading to, if you want to avoid potential problems.

You need a console keypad, and also the software in order for it to function, and these are far from free.

Hi Guys,

Well I think its gone pear shaped on me on one of the controllers. I was able to upgrade 2 controllers to MCD 5.0 using the SI tool with no dramas. I was able to take a backup on these as well with no issues. On the next day (today) I did not have my trusty laptop with the right version of java. So I decided to let the SI tool do the backup. I now believe that this was a bad idea as the upgrade stalled at some point the the controller reset and went into a loop. I have been forced to do a fresh installation with no DB. I have attached the SI log which shows at which point the controller reset during the upgrade.
Question:
1. Where does the SI tool save the backup before installing? I was using my laptop as my ftp server
2. Will it be possible to recover from this without having to reprogram from scratch?
3. Has anyone been in this kind of situation before?

I'm seriously at loss of what could have happened as this is the 3rd controller I was upgrading in exactly the same way.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Cheers!
Steve

You can try looking in /db/backup/data_save and there should be the files in there, but they might not be in a complete restorable format without mitel involvement.

Best bet would be to get on the blower to Mitel and get a support ticket logged and get the correct procedure to recover the system.

kwahodi,
Be sure to let us know what the fix is for this.
It would be a good bit of know how to add to our tool bag.

Could be a bug. Where possible I do an upgrade when I am directly connnected to the front on the controller to eliminate the LAN. Not always possible of course.

The software installer does the data save to your laptop so you should still have the datasave if the tool got that far before going pear shaped.
