REMOTE EXTENSION
« on: March 21, 2013, 02:34:28 PM »
Hi Guys,

i have an Mxe running MCD 5, and i have a user who will be working from home, i have considered dynamic extension but was wondering if i could setup a remote extension using

1)normal internet connection and NATting at the local router???
or
2) a vpn with the necessary port forwarding.

suggestions for the simplest method possible would be appreciated.

its a 5212 ip phone and so far have not had to set this up, are there any changes that need to be made on the controller side?

i want to stay away from mitel border gateway.

Thanks all

Can I ask why you want to stay away from an MBG server? Its by far the easiest way to get this working.

Hi Bluewhite, thanks, the reason is simply that i do not have the resources for a server/pc or the licensing for the mbg etc, basically using what the customer currently has available.

I've seen people do it with a one-to-one NAT.

VPN... its the only other solution I know of that works. A router on each end that supports a site to site VPN will work well.

Agree with the VPN solution.
DHCP options will not traverse though, so on the remote phone place it in teleworker mode by holding the 7 key while booting and enter the controllers IP address.
If all routing is setup correctly you will get DHCP from local server and connect to the 3300.

If you don't want to buy a MBG then to run a phone at home you need to be on the network with the controllers. The best way ( and the most secure ) is to use a VPN. My vote also goes to VPN. Don't think you want to expose your voice network by using NAT.
