Is there an easier way to set/change speed dial buttons?
« on: May 07, 2025, 04:22:47 PM »
We recently switched to mitel and I am hoping I am just doing things incorrectly. Surely this is not the best way to update speed dial buttons.

Currently, when a user requests speed dial button changes, which happen frequently (K-12 school district), I find the user in the MiVB, go to Keys and update them manually. If someone wants to reorder the buttons and move some up top, I have to basically overwrite the rest of the buttons. Same with copying buttons to another phone. Copy keys>Check the boxes of the buttons> Select User Speedcall for each one> type the extensions in manually. Luckily, the display names are filled in at least. Here, we have all administration and office staff on a different model phone. If I have to update the buttons for everyone, I export all devices, extract the extension range for that school, sort by model, put the extensions into a list.

As far as I can tell, the key templates are only applied during bulk upload in the MiCollab and are basically useless once the phone is in the system.

Is this really how you do it? Is there not some template you can download, edit in excel, then upload to a specified range or extension list? Can I edit the template and repush it to those devices in which its applied? This would make sense, but I have not been able to make this work.

I usually would export the multiline set keys form, then created new spreadsheet(s) for import. Depends upon button type where it may be required to unassign the buttons before loading in the final changes. I also usually strip the first part of the export to just get to the actual key part.

Is this under MiVB> Users and Configuration> Import then grab the 3300ICPImportSpreadsheet with the key assignment sheet?

Another option - don't.

Let me explain.  When we switched from the 5212 to the 6920 units, we standardized every classroom on a specific set of speed dials.  From there, if they want to add a speed dial, we let them but they have to do it manually.  For this phone, they can hold the speed dial button down and will eventually get the options to add the speed dial information.  Not sure that's an option in your case, but it has really cut down on the 'can you set this key for me' type of requests.  We do still get them from time to time from office staff, but the classroom staff have accepted that this is now the standard.

Fwiw.

Yes end user can do a long key press to change a 6900 series phone, but an admin approach to mass changes might be my suggestion

This is the way... 100%.

Either that or train their IT people to make the changes... or start charging them by the hour to do it, and if you on-site time is more expensive than remote, tell them a site visit is needed. Once you tell them that this is going to be a few hundred bucks every time you do this, they may be more open to a standard layout that is stagnent. DSS/BLF changes are one thing, regular speed dials can be done by the user or IT staff.
