Flashing a 6940 back to MINET
« on: January 17, 2024, 09:55:45 AM »
Hi,

I've acquired some 6940 phones which appear to have been flashed with SIP firmware. I need to re-flash in order to use them on my MiVoice Business 3300 running release 8.0. From what I've read, I need to flash with MINET_6940-enc.st which is present on the TFTP server on my PBX.

I'm able to get into the web gui of the phone. There is a menu option called Firmware Update. When I specify MINET_6940-enc.st it returns a message saying "Unable to upgrade firmware." I've tried moving the file to a web server and using that as the source, but I get the same error.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

you need to export the firmware from Ipbx and put into a tftp server on your computer .

Appreciate the response. Unfortunately, no joy. I've put the file on an HTTP server and a TFTP server, but when I click the Download Firmware button, it responds with the "Unable to upgrade firmware" response almost instantly. I was able to monitor the Open TFTP server on my laptop, and it did show that there was some sort of communication with the 6940, because it showed the IP address of the phone and the word "Timeout". It almost feels like the capability to download firmware has been disabled somehow. I hope that's not the case.

Can you share screenshot of the error, also your tftp server?

maybe the issue comes from the tftp server you are using.
try with tftp64
disables windows firewall.
otherwise prepare an anydesk access, I can take a look if you want.

Hi Sunspark,

I was able to successfully flash the phone to a newer version of the SIP firmware using this very same TFTP server. I got the SIP firmware from https://www.mitel.com/open-solutions/6900. The phone now has 6.1.0.171 whereas it had 5.2.1.2100 before. This makes me think the TFTP server is not the issue.

Here is the error message I find on the phone after the TFTP update fails:

I think the problem might be that the version of the firmware I'm trying to install is from 2017 and the phone itself was manufactured in 2019. I've asked my Mitel vendor to see if there is a more recent firmware for the phone. He's got a ticket open with Mitel now.

I'll update here when I have some news.

I forgot to mention that there are two types of firmware but with the same name. one for the 69xx and another for the 69xxW (wifi)

The phone in question is a 6940 without the W.

My vendor has been told by Mitel that the correct version is 1.03.000.101 which is the one that is failing. I'm waiting for more information.

I'm thinking I probably do, but my vendor is telling me 1.03.00.101 is the right one. Our MiVoice 3300 is on Release level 8.0 SP3 PR1.
If you are able to share a new version of the MINET firmware, I'd be grateful.

If the problem still persists, just register that 6940 SIP phone to a MiVoice Business PBX as a generic SIP device, then as the phone become operational in SIP, login to the phone's IP address via browser, go to admin menu with pwd 22222 then try again firmware update with file name MINET_6940-enc.st, tufts server address to be as MiVB PBX's IP and the port 69.

Thanks, all. I was able to flash to MiNet after getting version 01.04.00.080 from my Mitel vendor.
