Multiple trunk lines, each ringing a single extension

Hi yall,

We are currently working on getting a new voip system from Mitel. We were going to get a MiVoice250 but that system EOL'd so we decided to go voip. But that's not relevant...  Our system is unique in many ways but one aspect in particular is we have tens of analog trunk lines. Our current system has these trunk lines assigned to individual extensions where that trunk line is essentially their own private outside line. A ring in on that trunk would only ring the assigned extension and that extension when dialing 9 would only access that trunk. The integrator is saying that is not possible with this Mitel system and that the trunks will need to be part of a pool of outgoing numbers. I understand it may be an odd use case but it seems strange that a modern system would not be able to accommodate that configuration. Do ya'll have any insight? Thank you : )

That can be done up to a point.
I believe you'll be limited to ~64 trunks that way and will need to be planned out carefully.
It's done using COR.  You assign a unique COR to every device and trunk combo.
Then you can put all trunks in the same trunk group and when a device dials 9 they will only be able to access their own trunk.
The downside of this is that the COR will not allow you to call extensions without dialing their full digit string.
If the trunks need to be transferred to another extension then you're screwed. 
If the trunks only need to be accessed by the one device then you can just program them as DTS trunks and put them on a key on the device.

Of course, I don't think I need to tell you that this is a nightmare to setup and maintain and there will be lots of "gotchas" along the way.  The best thing to do is replace the analog trunks with PRI or SIP.

Hi Ralph, thanks for your reply : ) Having to dial the entire digit string for an extension will be a major pain. Maybe not having to dial 9 and just programming a soft key for their trunk would work better, if that was one of your suggestions. If we were to go that route with the trunk access being a key on the device, could we have incoming calls on that line only ring that one extension as well? Where incoming calls on any of the twenty or so trunk lines get routed to individual extensions and outgoing calls from those extensions will grab their trunk with a soft key.

Look through the help files for DTS (Direct Trunk Select).  There is a similar feature code but you want to read up on the option from within the Trunk Attributes form.

Thinking about it, you could also disable dial 9 and then route the calls as normal to each extension.  But then add a speed dial button to each phone that dials the Direct Trunk Access Feature Code for each individual user's trunk.  The format would be
<FAC>+<4 digits trunk number>
Example "**20010" would directly access trunk 10 (assuming **2 was your FAC). Once the user hears dial tone he/she would dial the desired number.
This would allow for Voice Mail - DTS does not allow for VM - and call transfers.
The downside is that after dialing the number the user must dial # or there will be one way audio for a few seconds.

Buckets, on the 3300 if you used SIP Trunks or a PRI each line can still send out it's own caller ID and the user would not be able to modify that - the outgoing caller ID for each call would not be randomly selected from the pool of numbers you port to the new circuit. Incoming calls on each DID also go to each individual user, not the pool. That may not be an option for you but if it is, it's doable and would probably save you some money.
