Call hangs up after 3 hours?
« on: September 06, 2019, 02:01:46 AM »
We have had a user report an issue where he thinks the Mitel MiVoice Business system hangs up after 3 hours max.
Now I know it could of been the other end that hung up, the SIP tail dropped, the NAT table had an random issue etc etc.

Just to put myself at ease before I tell him otherwise, is there such a setting?

There is a Class of Service setting for Call Duration, but I think the max is 120min (so 2hrs)

Are you using SIP trunks?

I found the COS settings and you're right, 120mins is the max. Also the setting "Enable Call Duration Limit on External Calls" is set to no so it's not here.
I quizzed the user and he said "It had a specific message that came up at 2.58:30 that said you are at the 3hr max call limit and it will disconnect in 30 seconds." so it must be coming from somewhere in the Mitel.

We are using SIP.

Message on the phone display or message being played to the user? The Mitel won't give you an audio message to say you've reached a call limit.

Could it be the carrier that has a 3hr limit set? It's worth asking them.

I will be asking them too but it was on the phone display so would assume only the Mitel PBX could send through through.

Most SIP carriers have per call duration limits, generally to help reduce toll fraud (which is still a very real thing)... In my company on our hosted platform we use 7 hours, and I have heard other companies use 4~12 hours, although 3 seems kind of short but I think this could very well be a carrier thing.

One additional possibility, although at 3 hours it makes the possibility pretty low, is that your firewall is dropping the call due to long a session being open.

Just to close off my own thread, it ended up being the SIP provider.
