Making Phone Name Show Up in DHCP?
« on: February 22, 2019, 12:15:48 PM »
Is there a way to get a phone to register a name when it grabs a DHCP server address?  I am using Windows 2012 R2 Server with the DHCP service.  All the phones show up as having taken an address but they don't have a name.  Rather than doing DHCP Reservations, I'd just like to give the phone a name during setup and let it register that name with the server.

I don't see how that would be possible... The phone doesn't know it's name or extension until well after it gets it's DHCP lease.

A name isn't an alternative to an IP address.
A Windows DHCP server will (optionally) send a host entry to DNS after its lease offer has been accepted.
You have to make sure "Enable DNS dynamic updates..." is ticked on the Scope Properties.
I guess this might also depend on what information is included in the DHCP Request from the phone.

If this is for help with network-level troubleshooting, bear in mind that handsets report their DN with LLDP so you can see DNs in the LLDP neighbours table on your switch.

I was trying to find a way to distinguish them in the DHCP Lease list.  I was hoping there was a parameter I could set on the phone that would be handed off to the DHCP Server so it would register a name with the IP.  Thanks for all of the info.

What you are looking for is the information kept by DNS.
But when you say "name" I am thinking you mean their extension number?
You should look on your controller at the form called "All IP Telephones".
