Mitel 5212/5224 phone's Voice quality issues
« on: September 29, 2017, 02:16:24 PM »
Hi All ,

I am facing voice quality / call drop issues on Mitel 5224 .I could see huge packet loss;8-10% on Mitel 5224 models from cisco router while when i replaced it with Mitel 5312 I found that there was no packet loss.

Interesting thing is when i ping the same Mitel 5224 phone from different places I get different results :

From VoIP server - 0% packet loss
From PC in same net work - 0% packet loss .

From Cisco router - 10% packet loss .

Can you advise why is this happening ?

Vikram

Is this with only one particular phone or every 5224 model. (assuming you have more)

Wasnt the 5212/5224 discontinued in 2009?

Possible route issue?

Run trace routes to see where packets are going.

Watch for rogue devices with the same IP as the Cisco. We had a phone that had constant audio problems and it was a Netgear firewall/router with the same IP as the gateway. The phone was behind the Netgear. Once it was removed, the phone worked great. But this could be true of any device on the network with the same IP.

Check IP settings on the phone to make sure they are correct.

Vikram,

If you are looking for where packet loss is through a route and you are on a Windows machine then use pathping to find out where it could possibly have an issue. Just keep in mind that ping, tracert and pathping all use ICMP packets and some routers or devices do not respond to those, but it will at least give you an idea of where the issue may be occurring.

Also, as you probably know, it takes longer for pathping to finish than either a ping or tracert, but in this situation it would be faster in the long run than doing each one individually at each hop.

Thanks,

TE

Thanks Folks for your suggestion although the issue has been fixed . The issue was the bandwidth saturation at customer site and has nothing to do with phone Model.

However , the answer to my question is below -

Why did I get packet loss on Mitel  52XX series from Cisco router and didn't get any packet loss from window's /linux  towards same device ?

We ran a continuous ping test from a Cisco Router (core) to a 5224 and 5340; the results were 91% success for the 5224 and 97% success for the 5340. The Cisco router sends the pings much faster and is probably overflowing phone buffers as the pattern of response/drop is consistent on both phone types. Keep in mind the MN5224 is an old phone model and wouldn't have the same chipset/processor power that a 5340 has.Pings run from the MBG and a computer are much slower so the phones respond to all the packets.

Ping test sent from the router is not pertinent to voice quality testing, perhaps we should look at ways to score MOS.
