Mitel 5000 high CPU usage
« on: September 04, 2013, 12:52:51 PM »
Hi,

We have a Mitel 5000 PBX in our office that is experiencing high CPU usage.  From what I can gather, I can only see statistics under 'System Utilization' within A&D.  Is there a way to actually analyze processes, with drill-down capability?  Our CPU was sitting at 100% usage last evening at around 12:30AM, with no calls coming in.  We had one user logged-in to an ACD group, and she was unable to complete or receive any calls without me remotely rebooting the switch.

Also, I forgot to mention.  We are running on an HX Controller, 20 Cat A devices, 43 Cat E devices, and below is the software specifics:

DB Programming = v5.1.3.0
Session Manager = v5.1.0.8

Call Processing = 5.1.0.25

Do you have port 5060 open on the router through to the telephone system?

No, I do not believe we do.  Why do you ask?

We have had a couple of instances of hacking attempts to 5000 series when people find a router with 5060 open.

You get high CPU usage which causes the IP Phones on the 5000 to behave like they are full of treacle.

On the older versions the 5000 used to just reset constantly!

In fact if you don't have any SIP trunks or end points you could turn this port off on the Mitel.

I need to know if there is a system-level view on what is consuming most of our system resources.  Is our CPU too under-powered?

63 handsets should be fine on a basic 5000 without a PEC-1 or PS-1.

Have you checked the logs, System Resource Applications, IPRA, might as well have a look in the SIP logs just in case.

Only other time I have seen this is when a customer had an IP Phone plugged into and outlet then they had a patch lead from the PC port plugged back into another outlet, causing an ethernet loop.

Thanks.  I've sifted through the logs that you've mentioned, and I do not see anything out of the ordinary.  Is there a known issue with the firmware that we are using?  I must also mention that we are using Xarios as call center software, which works fine.  However, I was wondering if this was known to be a hog on the CPU for the phone switch?

We use Xarios quite a lot and have never had CPU issues, I think you will need to take down services one by one to see if you can find the culprit.

Take the IP Phones off line, then try disconnecting the Xarios App server, disconnect it from the network by sticking a spare switch on so the only IP connection is your PC running the Admin software so you can monitor the CPU usage.

Sorry I don't have a yeah this was Vx.x release excuse for your problem!

I don't have a cheat sheet of what 5.1.x.x version is 5.1 SPx, but I do know that 5.1, 5.1SP1, and 5.1SP2 had some issues with memory leaks and high CPU usage, I had to upgrade about a dozen 5.1SP2 systems to SP4PR5 a while back due to similar issues and VM lockups. I would recommend upgrading to latest 5.1 release on the old Inter-Tel FTP site, if you don't know to access it, give tech support a call. I believe 5.1 SP4 PR5 was the most current last time I looked, something like 5.1.0.52
