remote IP phones randomly cut out
« on: January 10, 2011, 02:51:20 PM »
One of my remote sites 5212 IP handserts randomly cuts out while users are on the phone. The site is connects via HP Procurve POE to VLAN over to host PBX in another city.  Oddly this just began happening with no reason (No recent upgrades, VLAN is terting clean, POE has not failed)

Error message on the 3300 ICP (running version 4.0):

Source:    Heartbeat Server
Description:    ICP has lost contact with (192.168.34.34 (08-00-0F-48-E8-6D)), network driver cluster pool free: 3039 and low water mark: 3005
File Name and Line Number:    HeartbeatRecvTimeoutHandler.cpp;286

Thoughts?
appreciated.

This would suggest to me that packets are dropping accross the VPN.
If you set up a continious ping (both directions) do you loose packets?

Are the phones set up in teleworker mode (you don't need a TW server to do this) or are you pointing to the 3300 via it's DHCP options?

You may want to verify that all your timer settings are correct in the controller registery form.

Thank you for the reply....here is more insight....

I will test that this week great idea. I do have a service call into the Telco and like eveyone else I am waiting for response.

I should have clarified this....my bad. The phone are connected to a DHCP host server in another office, same on that the PBX is in. I am using a VLAN extension in this case.

You may want to verify that all your timer settings are correct in the controller registery form.
Is there some suggestions for the timer settings?

Open the form then click the help button.  All the defaults are displayed there.   I've never had a system that used anything other than the default and when I screwed with ours I created a similar problem to the one you described.

Also, something you may want to try, is to turn off ICMP redirect.   There was an issue with 53xx phones with this so in your case it may not make a diff but it wouldn't hurt to turn it off for a day or two to see.

Interesting point Ralph....

The phone reporting the issue are 5330 and 5312. I think I might try that....

another awesome suggestion

Thank you.

Turning off ICMP redirect is done in the data switches.
Here's the link on Cisco's site to do it:
www.cisco.com/E-Learning/bulk/public/celc/CRS/media/targets/4_2_5.swf

This link will show you how to turn off ICMP redirects.
www.cisco.com/E-Learning/bulk/public/celc/CRS/media/targets/4_2_5.swf

I don't know if an upgrade will help or not.

An upgrade will not necessarily fix the problem of a redirect certain sets respond differently to the redirect. A continuous wireshark should catch the redirect if it is happening.
