Prefix Failures and Oddities
« on: December 02, 2020, 02:43:16 PM »
Hi, everyone.

I am new to this forum and to the administration of a Mitel system, so if this doesn't belong here, please point me in the right direction.

We are a mid-sized school district and we've had a ton of turnover in the phone sysadmin role. Unfortunately, that role has fallen to me now, IT Support Services, after rounds of cuts to our department. I am constantly handling tickets for numbers that cannot be dialed, and I can't find a solution.

We have roughly 860 local prefixes loaded in Mitel Connect Director. Every week, I receive a new number (or 7) that one of our schools can't dial. I check our prefix listing, and the number may or may not be there. If it is not there, I add the prefix and dial the number to test it. It almost never works. Instead, I must immediately delete the added prefix. Once I do, the number can be dialed.

If the number is there, I delete the prefix, re-add the prefix, then delete it again. The number can then be dialed.

I've attempted to speak with both Mitel and our telecom provider. Both of them point fingers at each other and it never goes anywhere. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I first thought that there could be some kind of accidental database limit set which prevents us from adding any more prefixes without deleting the same number of random ones, but I don't really know.

Any help you could offer or directions I could go would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Already, I don't understand why you have so many prefixes.  Anyway, what I would do in your place is to run the command: "ccs trace enable continuous" and dial the number then read the trace.  If it is sip trunk, do a sip tcpdump and read the pcap.

Mitel Connect Director what is that? Are you having issues with 7 digit dialing? is 10 digit  allowed?

Are we talking prefixes, here, or extensions?

They are prefixes. We don't have an issue with internal calling.

Connect Director is our admin console for Mitel.

The issues seem to be exclusively with external dialing, generally 10 digit.

Is the problem that the carrier won't accept the 1?   as in 1-555-666-7777

They're local prefixes, so it could be possible the telecom provider has trouble with adding the 1 in front of local numbers.

I'm taking all these possibilities down to investigate. I really appreciate the efforts! Like I said, this is a bit outside my wheelhouse.

This sounds like the previous Shoretel product...

Looks like Connect Director is definitely Shoretel rebranded as Mitel.

That said, I'd also love to know where are you located that you have 860 local prefixes????

I can't think of anywhere is that would have that many local prefixes. Assuming the shoretel stuff works the same as the mitel, it's easier to only define local and blocked. It sounds more like you're trying to define every  prefix, which is a long row to hoe.
