3300 <-> Asterisk. Working OK but no audio from one phone.
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:01:23 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have managed to setup a trunk between our 3300ICP system (V4.1 SP1 with 2 SIP trunk licences) and an Asterisk server on the same LAN, and by all accounts things are working well in both directions BUT audio does not work from my desk phone to/from the endpoints on the Asterisk server. Calls to/from any other combination of Mitel/Asterisk endpoints (including tablets connected to the Asterisk system via wifi) work fine - it's just my desk phone that won't play nice.

My phone is a 5235 connected to the 3300 and calls to/from another extension with a 5235 to the Asterisk world work fine. All the phones connected to the 3300 are using the Minet protocol.

At face value, this seems to be a CODEC or RTP port-type issue, but there's not much that can be adjusted within the 3300 that will tweak my phone and as far as I can see, the setup of my 5235 is identical to that for the working one. Staring at packet traces and SIP logs on a Snom phone (on Asterisk) hasn't been enlightening either!?

Any practical suggestions?

Thanks

Can you ping from your phone to a Snom? and vice versa?

Is the asterisk and the phones on the same vlan? If not is there a valid route between the two?

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback - ASCII Drawing below:

|-----Mitel phones on DHCP-----Mitel 3300 192.168.204.2 -----92.168.204.200 Asterisk 172.20.0.7 -----Snom 3xx DHCP + Tablets and Smartphones-----|

In other words:

3300 = 192.168.204.2
Mitel (Minet) phones DHCP on 192.168.204.x
Asterisk has two NICs on 192.168.204.200 and 172.20.0.7
Snom SIP phones DHCP on 172.20.x.x.

Call setup & forwarding works any-to-any phone but on my Mitel phone (and only mine), everything works (phone rings, picks up etc) except there's no audio for calls to/from anything on the Asterisk side.

All of the Mitel kit is on VLAN2 and there's no specific VLAN config on any of the Asterisk stuff (ie: the Mitel trunk or the endpoints)

It's more of a minor annoyance than a showstopper, but it's perplexing that it's only the one device affected.

As it's only your phone, there aren't any static settings on it? Factory reset to clear anything static out might flush the issue out.

Factory reset ...

No change!

Ah well, if I get to the bottom of this I'll update the thread, but any more suggestions are most welcome.

Update: Just found two more phones with no audio working to/from the Asterisk world - a 5330 and a 5312 - so that's 3 out of about 30.

Update2: This is switch-based (working = on a D-Linkj PoE switch, not working = on a Netgear) so I'm checking out VLAN settings.

To be continued...

I finally got things working by moving the Asterisk server onto another of the (4) VoIP switches in the rack.

The Asterisk and Mitel boxes are now on the same network switch and the three other switches (one of which hosts the Snom phones) are fanned out from here. I have also tried moving the Snoms to another switch and things stayed working.

Although this doesn't tell me specifically why the previous configuration wasn't working, it's almost certainly down to VLAN handling, but it's difficult to test things out on the live phone system.
