Mitel and Google Apps
« on: April 26, 2012, 04:00:25 PM »
You will have to excuse me on a Noob question here but we recently moved our email services over to Google Apps from an Internally hosted Exchange server.

Our Mitel reseller informed us this shouldn't be an issue and all we would have to do is change our Gateway settings to match Google Apps settings for Unified Messaging to work. We did this but the unified messaging is not working.

Our current settings are:

With Mitel:

The current Gateway Configuration is:

Administrator E-mail address: phone@companyname.com
E-Mail Address: phone@companyname.com
E-Mail Real Name: Google Apps
E-mail Smtp port: 465
E-mail System: SMTP
E-mail username: phone@companyname.com
Gateway Password: #########

With Google Apps:

Imap and Pop are enabled to allow emails to go through the Phone account and Captcha has been cleared

On the DNS side:

With the Companyname.com DNS record we appended our SPF record to allow smtp servers on the IPv4 range to send emails from within the Mitel network to send to Google Apps.

Are there any settings we are missing or anything we can do to troubleshoot this issue via the mitel system?

Thank you

I find that things like this get tripped up easily on either port #, or whether it's ssl or not, or whether the login and password are correct (and haven't been locked out inadvertently).

I see no reason why Google Apps shouldn't work the same as Exchange.  I use them both and am a fan of them both.

Hi Brad043,
I reached out to one of our product specialists, and they said they may be able to provide a more detailed answer if we knew the messaging system you are using? I was still able to get this however;

"While on-prem email systems and hosted email systems appear the same/similar to end users, and to a certain, extent, to administrators,
there are distinct differences in the implementation. Mitel has a number of UM products and we are working to address theses differences so that our UM solutions will interwork with hosted email solutions. Depending on the specific Mitel messaging product, the rollout timing and level of support will vary."

I hope this helps.

Thank you. The Mitel System is the CS5000 with DB version 4.0.3.95.

I have checked the firewall on that network and it is not blocking any outbound traffic and is able to tracert to the Google App servers without issue.

I am at a loss as to where to go from here as the company that sold us the Mitel system is refusing to return our calls or support the system in any way at this time.

Thank you very much

Brad043,
Are you trying to do full UM or just email forwarding?

If you're trying for email forwarding, and that's not working, if you go into the Diagnostics panel, there is an email log that you should be able to view to see any possible smtp errors.

Verify that GoogleApps does not use TSL or SSL.  If it does it will not work over an encrypted connection like this.
