The FQDN or IP you entered on install to point to the UC server is probably wrong.
The new authentication (now that certificates have been removed) is that the connection MUST be via FQDN and must match exactly the FQDN of the server

You do not mention the controller version, there were substantial improvements from MCD 4 to 5.
If you are not running 5 at a minimum, I would recommend an upgrade.
