Title: Most Common Outside Line Access Code in CA
Post by: ralph on February 25, 2017, 02:58:01 PM
A question for my neighbors to the north.
Is it more common to set up outside line access using a 9 or an 8?
I have a CA customer I'm setting up a new system and currently they're using and 8.
I'm used to using a 9 so an 8 feels weird to me.
It would make my numbering a little cleaner using an 9.

We use 8 for everything since 911 is a requirement here (no outside access code when dialing 911) and people have a tendency to double dip the 1 for some reason, so for probably 10 years now we have been using 8 instead of 9 unless the customer throws a fit over it.

Intertel has been using it for as long as I can remember, it is just a user thing I guess.

Now that you mention it, I see what  you mean about the 911.
I don't give that much thought anymore since I figured out how to resolve that problem in the 3300.

So you just tell the customer they need to dial 1+ for every number? lol... guess that works since there is no "Direct to ARS" feature in the MCD.

I have tried to build all systems using 8 over the last few years, to prevent the mistaken 911 dialing and it seems to have worked.

Now I'm just waiting on the government to find some official use for 811...

In many states 811 is "One Call" for locate requests... All requests for utility locating goes to a central dispatch center for electric, gas, telephone, cable TV, etc.

Well there are 7 or 8 area codes just in the SE of the state so dialing 10 digits is pretty much the norm.

I hear yeah, not quite that many here, we have 4 or 5, but same principle and have to dial all 10 for everything
