Title: Wireless SIP Handsets
Post by: ralph on August 06, 2010, 01:40:49 PM
I have an app where a user would like to have a wireless phone that they can take traveling with them and use from hotel rooms.
Sorta like Mobility but not.

What I'm thinking is a SIP wireless phone connected via teleworker.

Has anyone done this?  and if yes, what kind of issues have you had?

We attempted something like this. The only issue we had was places that offered free wifi, but wanted you to login on a redirected splash page, before they'd allow you out to the interwebs. The phone had no way to do that, so in those places was unable to be used.

I've got an iPhone, so have been doing this with a sip based app called iSip. Because I can log into splash pages, it works pretty well for me.

We did this as well - worked fine for us.

Was wondering what the options around MWI are for things like this?

don't forget that SIP phones via MBG is unencripted voice:

'While the majority of traffic in MBG is encrypted, release 5.0 introduces support for SIP. Our
implementation is UDP-based, and unencrypted at this time. Additionally the RTP streams for the
voice call are also plain RTP, and thus unencrypted. As our SIP implementation cannot make use of
SRTP at this time, calls between SIP and MiNet sets are also

A SIP device will work with MBG 5.2 or higher. I run the Bria softphone on my iPhone to connect to my office and it works great.

@Mattmayn: Yes, but with ICP3300 via teleworker?

MBG is the new name for Teleworker. MBG = Mitel Border Gateway. Because starting in 5.2 is allowed SIP communication as well as Miatai.

So depending on the version, yes Teleworker/MBG supports sip phones connected to a 3300. I run a SIP phone on my iPhone, as well as a DECT cordless at my house.

I just had one of our sales reps buy a SIP client for his Android phone and it worked over the wireless.
It looks like he's blocked over the G3 network but the wireless worked quite well via SIP
