So I have a customer that has a fairly large 5000, it started around 100 phones and a single PRI, and is now 230 IP phones with 2 PRIs and networking to another 5000 with the VM for both systems hosted locally. They are having an issue with faxes being cut-off mid-page or after one page to a fax server, occasional lag in phone operation, and extremely long reboot times (like 30 minutes to operational status)... The system only has the Processor Expansion card and not a PS-1, and the CPU utilization is typically around 75% with frequent spikes of 100% and RAM usage runs in the 60-70% range. We have recommended going to a PS-1 for this customer but they are bulking at is saying their problem is elsewhere in a misconfiguration of the 5000, but we believe it is a overloading issue and have recommended a PS-1. Their primary concern at this point is the fax cut-off issue.
My real question is, what CPU usage and RAM usage levels are acceptable and where is the level that is cause for concern?

I have a site similar issue on a large site. 120 + digital phones, 6 IP. They have Oaisys, CSM running as well when they get over 2200-2500 calls a day they have system slow downs. I have had to reboot it when it starts to stay above 30-35%. It will peak every hour at 100% in a cleanup process. I had major problems with the system when it stayed above 50-60% CPU usage. Voice mail to email can cause a lag. Check system processes in your log files if you see a file size that seems unusually large that will be the one to review.
I'm trying to get this customer onto a PS1

Acejavelin,
Well engineering would tell you that you should have already added the PS-1 due to the amount of phones and trunking that you have associated with the system.
The PEC is only for additional resources and the PS-1 is only for additional processing power. You can have a PEC without a PS-1 and you can have a PS-1 without a PEC just in case you were wondering. Normally though it is best to have a PEC if you have a PS-1 as you will most likely need those additional DTMF resources.
Thanks,
TE

That makes perfect sense... Why couldn't Mitel have said it so simply?!?!
-
I was told by a Mitel engineer that the PEC was only used for IP resources and that a PS1 would offload voice mail which would free up the CPU and memory. The site I have has (2) PRI's and (12) POTS lines, no SIP trunks yet.
Have another site with (130+) IP phones and (2) PRI's. Their CPU usage stays around 20-30%.

Darrel,
Yes the PEC is for additional IP Resources as well and the PS-1 does off-load the voice processing from the Base System.
This is how I look at it as it makes more sense to me coming from the Axxess days.
The PEC is the same and an OPC [Options Card]
The PS-1 is the same as the CPS [Call Processing Server] (ATM, Blackbird, etc..) for the Axxess
Thanks,
TE

Yeah, looks like they finally are going with the PS-1.

Will a PS-1 help with Alarm 112 "CPU: Running Low On System Dynamic Memory (Heap)" errors?
Customer has been getting a lot of them this morning... :/
-
Acejavelin,
That is a new alarm for me, but it should alleviate the issue; so yes.

Been seeing last couple days on this system... Their phones have been very busy though, seeing 40+ outside calls active at one time.
Tried some temporary band-aiding: removed VM to Email for everyone, off-loaded some mailboxes and applications to another site, changed networking channels to G.711. Hoping it well help since Mitel says it's 7-10 days to get a PS-1.

PS-1 came in today! Going onsite to install it at 5pm... Have to upgrade their existing system from 6.0SP3PR1 to 6.1PR1 first.
Any gotchas on doing the install to watch out for? Never installed a PS-1 on a working system before...
-
Acejavelin,
Just do a full backup to your laptop and then install the PS-1. Convert the Database to use the PS-1 as well as upgrading it and then reupload and test.

Well, that went fine except about 80% of my greetings did not restore correctly and just sound like garbage, but a few did work fine. I used the save everything to PC option instead of storing the greetings to a USB key. Wouldn't be too bad except this customer has about 70 call routing announcements.

I've just done this.
You'll need to do it the old way through Voice Processor download, not the new way as it won't work for PS1.
Audiotex 1 and 2 need to be missed from your export. It will upload fine to the PS1 then.
HX files are compressed. When you put them into a PS1, they become uncompressed. Mitel say there is a fix coming.
Give it a try and update us.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info... wish I would have known that yesterday. The customer had all their scripts and had someone record them over.
I wonder if this could be part of my voicemail issues as well, some users are complaining that calls are getting dropped when transferred to their mailbox. The only thing that seems to fix it is deleting and recreating the mailbox, then it is fine.

Acejavelin,
Sorry to hear it didn't go too smooth and it is a little late now to change this, but go in and look at what compression the Voice Processor is set to. We normally keep all of ours on the G.726 (32 kbps) and I rarely have any issues with the recordings. If the System changes it when it goes to a PS-1 then you may only need to change the compression there to fix the bad audio issues.
Of course it is too late now since they rerecorded everything, but it may be valuable information for future conversions. As for the bad mailboxes I have run into that as well and the only solution I found was to delete and recreate them just as you have done.
The big question is did it fix their original problem.
Thanks,
TE

Both the new and old are set to G.726, I think it's the default.
And yes, it fixed all their performance issue, the system runs smooth as silk now!
