Title: VLAN Question
Post by: pakman on January 14, 2016, 04:19:45 PM
Hello,

Wondering how the following works.

Controller under the system IP properties has voice vlan ID 1 however, I don't use vlan 1 on our routers or switches as it's shutdown. Should I be setting the voice vlan ID to be the same as what I have it set on our switches? It hasn't caused any issues but that's how I inherited the system. Also, some controllers have it where I can label the voice vlan and data vlan so should I match the data vlan to what I'm using on our switch as well?

Thanks,

Your phone controller is more than likely plugged into a voice-vlan untagged port. So then it has no need to tag its own packets.

Changing the Voice Vlan option would tag those packets.

Yes, don't change the VLAN ID in the phone system unless you are using a CXi and need to use the embedded 16-port POE switch.

Changing the VLAN on the PBX itself can make for a maintenance nightmare later on down the road.

thanks. my phone system is plugged into a port that's tagged in my voice vlan but understand how this could turn into a nightmare down the road. I'm not using any of the PBX's as a switch.
