It's worked well for me a couple of times.
Makes life a lot easier.

Can it be done completely remotely? In other words, can I remote in using the MSL VPN, start the upgrade, let it finish and connect again to install the MBG software, or would I have to be onsite after it completes?

Yes.  I've done that at least once.

Used it once and it worked ok as well. Just made sure I had a good backup to fall back to.

I've done it a couple of times without issue. But like martyn, I make sure I have a good backup first.
