Should I get a few more years out of the above in terms of patches etc or think about getting a newer model, and if so what would that be?

Nothing wrong with a good ol' MXe III. It can run the latest version of everything.

That said, it's probably time to start formulating a plan to virtualize or go cloud. You have plenty of time if you start now.
