Title: Option 129 error when setting up replacement phone
Post by: ScottL on December 20, 2018, 08:57:10 AM
I need to replace a phone at an extension. The old one was a 5330, the new is a 5330e. I entered the MAC into the proper extension in the MCD. When I plug in the phone, I get a message on the phone:

DHCP timed out
Option 129 is missing

After that, I get an error message

Contacting RCS
RCS error

I took the phone back to my office, it booted, updated firmware, and connected normally. I took it back to the extension, same issue.

The old phone worked. Other phones on the same switch work. As far as I know, nothing has changed on the switch.

While the phone was in my office I tried to put it in Teleworker mode. It gets stuck at Contacting Server.

I have tried two different new phones. I did a factory reset on both of them. I checked to make sure the Device Type is set to 5330e.
Nothing works.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Scott

Scott,

I have been caught a couple of times forgetting to change the phone type from 5330 to 5330e.

Hi Mark, no, I made sure I'd set it to 5330e.

I took my 5330 phone and reprogrammed it for use as the replacement, and took the replacement (the 5330e that wouldn't work) and reprogrammed it for me. So everyone is happy, for the moment. However, someday the supply of 5330 phones will dry up.

The two phones work off different switches, so it is switch related, I'm assuming. Out of curiosity I took my 'new' 5330e to the offending extension and tried it, same Option 129 issue.

The original phone had to be replaced because the receiver hook switch got weak. When someone got a call and picked up, the receiver hook switch wouldn't pop up enough to make the connection. Irritating that a small part junks out a phone. Anyone ever figured out how to replace the spring in that assembly?

I did the set replacement code to replace a 5330 with a 5330e and it worked.  The code is set in the System Options under System Properties.

What DHCP options are you using and what software version?

Also check for any static settings set on the phone. (Like VLAN ID)

I have found one 7.0 software version phone firmware where the 5300 series but not the 5300e phones hook switches seem to be going bad.  I started replacing the phones brought them back to our own 3300 running 7.2 and the issue went away with new firmware.  Also replacing 5330 phones with 5330e I’ve never had to change the device type in 3300...it will update itself.

Did you try on a different port on the switch? I had this with 5224's in the past and it always came down to software levels on the controller.

The times I've had this issue, I've reset the phone to factory settings and/or manually set the gateway on the phone. Sometimes the port on the switch was the issue aswell.

This is a vlan issue. The phone is booting up in the default vlan

Check lldp config on the switch or try a different port

^^ This.

You would spot this by seeing the replacement phone's DHCP request being met by the DHCP server with a lease in the Data VLAN scope.

You should compare all your switch configs and make sure you have one standard config in use everywhere.
