Title: Decomission Mitel Controller
Post by: kmhconsultant on June 13, 2018, 11:57:36 AM
We have upgraded our system and are decommissioning our Mitel 5000 (580.1003).  Is there any sensitive data stored on these devices?  Is there a way to perform a factory reset?
Thanks in advance, as this is new to me.

Safest way is to remove the CF card and destroy it... everything would be stored there. Beyond that, even a factory reset leaves traces if you know what to do or look for.

What type of data would be recoverable?  I'm not really worried about call history.  Mainly any sensitive data.

kmhconsultant,

You can perform a default database through the front display of the system or through database programming. That will delete the database, but not the licensing from the system; which isn't considered sensitive.

Thanks,

TE

I was actually thinking voicemail messages... the compact flash is basically a older Linux filesystem, recovering deleted items is pretty simple.

Seriously, if you want to mitigate any possibility, remove the compact flash card and destroy it.

acejavelin,

Yes, you are correct and I wasn't thinking along those lines.

Sorry,

Honestly, just destroy the card... That eliminates the license that may be tied to it and any chance of privacy concerns from the data.

It can easily be replaced by any Mitel vendor, the 1GB card is around $60 and the 2GB is $100 (MSRP) and will have a new SSL number, it could be tied to the old AMC record by the owning vendor or transferred to a new one and used with the new CF.

One quick follow-up...  Do i need to do the default database reset AND destroy the flash card, or is that all on the flash card?

thanks!!!

kmhconsultant,

Everything is on the flash card nothing about your system is on the hardware itself.

Thanks,

TE

Nope... Just pop out the card and break it, the hardware would give away nothing but an IP address, subnet, and gateway, which by itself is not relevant.
