Title: Groping my way through UCA and iPad
Post by: ralph on July 25, 2012, 12:00:08 PM
Newbie questions here, I know, but I'm playing with UCA for iPad.
Does the iPad have UCA softphone?  If it does, I can't find it.
What about chat.  If it does I can't make it work.

I've been playing around with it for months. It does not appear to have either of those functionalities.

I can't see why they wouldn't put chat in there; the BB and Android clients have it. I don't think the iPhone/iPod client does, tho.

When I used the iPhone/iPod client on my iPod (I don't have an iPhone), it did not have a softphone either. None of their mobile clients do...not that I'm aware of, anyway.

No there is no softphone as yet, you can use office link instead, There is extra port forearding required for Chat, check the engineering guidelines.

I just went through the Engineering Guide, as the chat is something we've been looking for as well. They don't list chat as a feature of the iOS software products, but do for Blackberry and Android.

I know you can do chat via UCA 5.X webpage, so that might be an option for the iOS products.

I know from the people in our office with Androids, the chat feature causes problems on their phones (freezes) and drains their battery pretty good, so that's maybe by iOS doesn't have that yet. Don't know for sure, just a thought.

So with no chat or softphone what can it do besides dialing out from my desk phone?

Change personal ring group options since Mobile Extension is going away?

See status of other employee's on the phone?

In all honesty, not much.

You can also change your dynamic status.
There's also a scheduler in it to change your status based on time of day/weekday (if I recall correctly).
You can listen to your voicemails.
You can review your call history.
You can see other user's phone and dynamic statuses.

I was the only one using it on my iPad and I stopped. We don't have the ports opened up on our firewall and I got tired of having to VPN in to use UCA on it.

So if I wanted a softphone on iPad then I'd have to use a Bria with TW and external hotdesk.
Wow....

The next version of UCA will have chat support for iOS and hopefully they will have a softphone with it since it will now be SIP enabled.
