We have switched from an NEC system where when you called the extension, and it would automatically go to "announce" and you could talk to the user. If you wanted to ring the telephone, you would punch the extension and press 1 after the extension.
Users are not typically at their desks, but in the same office and away from the phone. Users complained that they still wanted that to be able to open the line to that office and talk over the speakerphone to the person.
What I am looking for -- if I call the user and want to ring the phone on our Mitel system, is there a way to for me -- as the caller -- to override the auto answer on a case-by-case basis without disabling auto answer across the system.

When I press # followed by the first digit of the extension it says "INVALID" Other suggestions?

Are talking about a Mitel 5000 system?
or is it a 3300?

That phone model is compatible with both the 3300 and the 5000.
Do you have a line after the top 3 keys going through the LCD. (Separating Softkeys from programmable keys?)
If so I would suggest the mods move this to 3300 forum.
For 3300:
If you know what the direct page FAC is you would dial this and then the extension number.

Ah... It does have a line separating them...
Sorry for the confusion.
We do have a direct page button programmed on all our phones, but doing that causes the phone to ring and then opens the speaker up to talk to them.
I suspect that the mods should move this to the 3300 forum.

Auto answer is a class of service feature so you don't need to turn it off system wide you can do it via the COS for the phones. You can also programme a enable disable key on sets so the use can choose to have it on or off.
If its off then a simple speedcall/dss key or dialing the extension will ring it or the direct page will simulate the auto answer....
Don't believe there is anyway to overide it on a call by call basis. But I could be wrong.

Definitely not the answer I wanted to hear :( There are times that I want force ring the phone because the person stepped away from their desk and forgot to turn auto answer off.

Conversly you could use the Direct Voice call feature. So normally the phone will ring but if you want to call them you activate the direct voice call which opens the speaker and mic and can also push the speaker to max volume if required. When the call is finished it reverts to normal. Feature access code can be under a key.

The Direct Voice Call feature allows a caller to establish a two-way handsfree call at the called party set whether or not Handsfree Answerback or Auto-Answer is enabled. One second of paging tone announces the call, which is presented either at the current volume level of the receiving telephone or at maximum volume if configured as such in the telephone's Class of Service. At the end of a maximum volume call, the telephone reverts to its previous volume setting
Would that work?

Add a second line to their phone and call it. It won't have auto answer.

Programming
Set the following options in the Class of Service of the originating and terminating devices:
Direct Voice Call Allowed - set to Yes to allow a telephone or console to initiate a call using the Direct Voice Call feature.
Direct Voice Call: Accept - set to Yes to allow a telephone to receive a Direct Voice Call.
Direct Voice Call: Maximize Volume - set to Yes to present Direct Voice Call at maximum volume or No to use current volume setting at the receiving telephone.
Program a feature access code for Direct Voice Call in the Feature Access Codes form.
Operation
All telephones
To initiate a Direct Voice Call:
Lift handset.
Dial the Direct Voice Call feature access code.
Dial the extension you want.
Speak to called party.
To respond to a Direct Voice Call:
Speak towards the handsfree microphone.
