Title: Free SIP number
Post by: acejavelin on May 10, 2016, 09:29:29 AM
Does anyone know of a free SIP service in the US where you can get a free (or nearly free) US number and make free outbound calls for PERSONAL use? http://www.ipkall.com/ shutdown their service on 5/1/2016

I have started doing a little research but haven't had time to dig into it too much, I did find http://www.ipcomms.net/freedid but didn't have time to look into it... I know there are other services like Callcentric where you can get an inbound only number, but I occasionally need to make outbound calls.

I use voip.ms. They have good rates and even getting a DID is pretty cheap (I use it for my winter phone in Florida). Without a DID, you're just paying for time, which is 1 cent/min for USA/CANADA

Actually, although it isn't SIP, I got Hangouts and Google Voice to do what I needed, just had to turn off the forwarding to my cell phone and set it to use the Hangouts Dialer app.

FWIW, I have setup Google Voice to a sip phone using simonics.com service. Cheap one time charge.

Going a bit further, I've got a little home lab setup with FreePBX running on a Raspberry PI, which uses my Google Voice account for PSTN connectivity. Have a couple of 5235's connected as SIP extensions plus a couple of softphones.

I like the simonics.com approach, might try that...

As far as setting up a server to run Asterisk or something like that, I don't need that even though most of the computers and the server in my house run Linux already so it would be pretty simple to add it to the file server but I don't want to go through all that.

Just to add a bit of humor, I used to have 2 AT&T pots lines at home. Told them to shut one down and as you can image, they shut the wrong one off. After getting it turned back on, I was told that the LD plan I had isn't available and I'd need a new one.

As you can image, my blood pressure was sky rocketed. Told them if they couldn't reinstate, don't want LD. Went for a few years without LD before setting up my Google Voice sip via simonics. Those calls are free now. :-)

Simonics GVGW works flawlessly with 3CX, just saying. I can make multiple concurrent outbound calls, but can only receive one inbound at a time.

I had never heard of Simonics GVGW before your post.
It appears it works with Google Voice.  Correct?
Isn't GVoice free for inbound?

Using the Simonics GVGW, I am able to place outbound calls as well. It works like a charm, I tell ya! If you want to test it, I'd be happy to set you up with a remote 3cx softphone to test from your smartphone and give you access to my 3cx installation so you can take a peek at the config.

Ralph, I have a couple of 5330 phones that are set in sip using google voice number and Simonics.  I use it mostly for outgoing and yes google voice is free for inbound and outbound in US and Canada
