Title: Mitel controller limiting simultaneous SIP trunk calls to one
Post by: mindw@rp on January 20, 2010, 07:45:15 PM
Hi all,

I am trying to set up a conference bridge using an Elastix box via a SIP trunk to our Mitel 3300 CXI controller.

This appears to work well except for the Mitel controller limiting simultaneous SIP calls to 1.

When I check the help the default simultaneous calls is "400", but when I try to modify this from 1
the system has a pop up saying "Maximum Simultaneous Calls for all records exceeds SIP Licenses".

I talked to our Mitel sales rep about it, suggesting is it because we have no SIP user licenses he says no you only need a SIP trunk license and he was unsure as to why it would limit calls.

Running software version: 8.0.11.7

Assistance/knowledge appreciated in why this limitation exists on our system

How did you configure the SIP integration?  Are they SIP devices or SIP Trunks in the Mitel?

No SIP devices, only a single SIP trunk configured in the Mitel controller to peer with the Elastix box.

There is one only single "SIP Trunk" license, and no "SIP User" licenses.

You need 1 x SIP trunk License for each 'virtual' trunk therefore if you want to make 2 concurrent calls out via SIP you need 2 x SIP trunk licenses etc.

Bobcheese, as I understand how a trunk works, a SIP trunk is a pipe for 1 to many calls as apposed to a SIP user channel of which you would need more then one. if what you say is correct why does the help information suggest that the default "simultaneous calls" is 400 for SIP trunks? :-\ It also doesn't mention that there is a minimum requirement for making multiple simultaneous calls by having at least 2 trunk licenses.

So are you suggesting I need a SIP trunk license for every call inbound and outbound of the Mitel controller or do I need at least 2 trunk licenses to make more then one (multiple) outbound call or inbound calls?

Its a poorly written documentation it should be 1 - 400

Since you only have one SIP trunk you can only have one SIP trunk call.

If you get more SIP trunk licenses you will be able to increase that value.

v2win is correct on the licenses.  It's not a "Pipe" of calls, it's a single connection per trunk license.

 ???
This is what it says:

"Maximum Simultaneous Calls

Enter the maximum allowable number of incoming and outgoing simultaneous calls for this peer. The default is 400.

    * Note: Set the maximum number of calls per link the same on both ends of the link."

From what I interpret from what it is saying above, is that if I have a SIP trunk peer I can make multiple "simultaneous" inbound and outbound calls with a single SIP trunk, the default being 400 simultaneous calls but not the limit. I assumed that the SIP trunking with the mitel controllers was not unlike IP trunking.

Ralph, does that mean if I want 30 routed calls to my conference bridge, I'll need to get 30 trunk user licenses?

Sounds like it defeats the purpose, with trunks not able to do more then 1 call per trunk...

You need one SIP trunk license for each concurrent connection. This is the same way the PSTN providers provision their SIP trunks.

The Max calls to a peer is to limit the number of connections for that peer since you do not build individual trunks for SIP as you would for a Digital or analog trunk. Think of it as assigning the SIP trunks to a trunk group. If you have 100 SIP trunk licenses and you wish to spread them out between multiple peers this is how you would do it.

Does this help you out?

Yes, i'm now starting to grasp the concept and operating aspects of it...  :)

I need to do some more reading and researching of SIP, the Mitel help isn't helping. ???

Cheers again.

You need to go back to your Mitel sales rep and ask him if he can arrange access to Mitel On Line for you. There are online training courses that will provide you with all the knowledge you need regarding SIP trunks and more.....

Just for reference the Help file is not very good at explaining what licenses you need for any feature to be honest.

With regards to needing 1 license for each concurrent SIP call, this is the only way Mitel can make money from it. As there is no extra hardware needed they either charge a one off fee of a large amount (like for ip trunking for example) or charge a small amount per connection.

bob, I have a question about that.  Is it possible for customers to portions get MOL.  I honestly never asked as I assumed no, but ...

It all depends on who yuo know  ;D and who your sales rep knows  >:(. MoL access can be given to anyone as long as there is a case for it. We have had customers in the past that have had access. But to be honest his sales rep should have known that you need a license per 'trunk' as this has always been the case.

I ran into the same thing. I was battling with my rep as to why we have to buy a license for each trunk? I understand the pricing model, I just do not like it. I guess everyone wants to make money right!

Just my $.02

If Mitel wasn't making money then there wouldn't be a Mitel.
Same for Advaya, Shoretel. Microsoft <insert anybody you want here>

The only people getting a free pass on needing to make money is the government.   They have a license to take money.

You can get the End User cert and I believe that would include access to MOL. No pricing, ordering, or anything like that. I'm not sure if you can even dowload software.
