Can I replace a CX controller with a CXi controller without doing anything special? A customers CX is failing and we cant get a new one from Mitel as it is discontinued, we have a couple CXi's in stock though.

As long as its an SX200 CXi controller and not a 3300 it should work fine, remember to change the SYSID chip or your license won't work.

It isn't all that simple.
If you backup the database and restore it into a different system, the hardware that is not there in the new one but was there in the old one get restored, but can not be changed, because it is not there, or different.
Had issues with dual vs single framer and embedded analog boards this way.
You better off deprogramming those units before the backup!

It's going to be exactly the same. The only hardware in it is a dual t1/e1 and a quad CIM. They will both get moved to the new controller.
