5212 won't send * from speed call whilst in a call

We have a number of 5212's running in SIP Mode on V8 and i have been unable to get the phone to send a * from within a key programmed as a speed call.

For example if the key was programmed to send *2 then it will dial *2 when not in a call, however if the user is in a call it will only dial 2.

Our 5312's work correctly, does anyone know how to get it to send the * during a call?
