Outgoing access without dialling access code
« on: June 23, 2010, 10:58:38 PM »
Is there any way to 'pre dial' the access code for an outside line. we have a number of phones that do not need to dial internal numbers and rather than dialling 0 for an outside line i would like them to just dial the external number.
I have looked in the COS in case there was something there and have a feeling i have seen something but can't find it.
Any pointers would be good.
Thanks

Well...   No and maybe yes.

No.  You can't have a phone predial an access code like 9.  (0?  Who uses 0?!)

But....

You may be able to program your ARS to not need an access code.   For example, here in the states, most calls all start with a 1.   So it would be possible to program your outbound calling to be 1+(10 digits) and route those call out.   You could also have the dial '9' access code still work at the same time.

Bear in mind that doing this you will have to be very careful with digit conflicts.

Thanks Ralph,
i'll take a look at the ARS like you suggested but sounds like it may cause more problems with conflicts as interstae and international are all prefixed with a 0 too.

in answer to your other question.... Australia uses '0' for outside line and wait for it .......9 for the operator!!!!! ???

Being a recent migrant from the UK it was a nightmare getting my head around it when i first got here. oh and emergency is '000'.

Thanks for the reply.

I hear you.  It is frustrating because forever it has been 9 to get an outside line, but when you have a customer that had a key system, no matter how much you warn them, they will dial  911 a few times by accident.

How many of us have a customer with a dial 3 or 8 dial plan?

'9' for operator???
Wow Australia is sure upside down and backwards..... ::)

Chak,  the 911 thing you mentioned  reminded me of a non-Mitel dealer that sold a system to a school district. (not a Mitel system).    The dealer used a trunk access code of '91' so everything they dialed was 91+1<area code +number>    Think of the fun that caused....    I happen to know the supervisor of the 911 center that got all the calls.   He called me and then the consultant for the school distract called me looking for advice because the dealer couldn't figure out what they should do.   That prompted me to write an article that got picked up and reprinted around the internet on how to stop 911 misdials.  It's Mitel centric but the concept works for a lot of systems.  You can see it here:  How to stop 911 Misdials

The 200 has a feature called "direct to ars" for this exact reason the 3300 does not.

You could try setting the phone up as a hotline with 9 in the associated digits not sure if this will work or not.

I've tried the 9 as a hotline.  Didn't work.   Even if it did, how would you call another internal extension?

I have a couple of retirement homes as customers that do not dial an access code to get to the PSTN, it works fine. As Ralph said, you will need to watch out for conflicts. If you tweak your ARS entries enough you will be fine, may take a while but will work.

Ok thanks all,
so it looks like the ARS tables it is. going to be a bit of a headache.

I am using these extensions as teleworkers off our system to some of our customers for VOIP over satellite. They work quite well but as they are essentially external to our business we don't want them dialling our extensions (interconnect restrictions sort that). So the ARS is going to be used by us as internal extensions and our customers without the access code.

(I know how to do it on an ISDX but the MITEL doesn't have the digit translation tables like they do.)

Thanks for all the advice anyway, off to the ARS for me.

Chris
