What tools do you use?
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:04:44 AM »
Here's a general question I'd like to throw out to the group:
What software/troubleshooting tools do you use?

For example:
I'll use Solarwinds TFTP software for loading test binarys.
Or
Ping Tracing software.
Or
Solarwinds Advanced Subnet Calculator.

Just trying to get an idea of what tools techs are finding useful.

There are some quite obvious ones and some not so obvious :

  • Putty, however I prefer to pay for SecureCRT
  • WinSCP
  • Filezilla - both client and server
  • 3CDaemon  - old but handy TFTP, FTP and Syslog server.  When looking for this make sure you get version 2 rev 10 as the older one out there is very buggy.  This one is old too, but works well
  • DESI for labels
  • Notepad++ for text editor
  • WinSplit Revolution for nifty dual monitor stuff
  • SnagIT - not free but good screen capture for making documentation
  • Angry IP Scannner
  • WinDirStat  very handy for looking for disk space hogs on windows.
  • 7Zip and/or WinRAR for compressed files
  • PrimoPDF - free PDF creater
  • Virtual Clone Drive - ISO mounter
  • VMWare - how did we ever do anything before virtualization???
  • Altiris Software Virtualization - free for "personal" use and very cool.  Almost nothing get's installed on my computer now.  I have a pristine XP VM that use to crate the Altiris packages.
  • FoxIT PDF Reader - free and fast.
  • WireShark - almost forgot this one but invaluable when you get really stuck on an issue

Continuing on from Chakara I also use:

voxconvertor - Tool for converting 3300 vmail to wav format
Hotdesk logout tool - A tool for logging out all/some hotdesk users from controllers
Waveasour -  For editing wav files

I have had it for about 2 year now. I work for Mitel directly, so this was passed to engineers internally. If you have an FTP server I can put it on, I will do so.

I work with Mitel directly and never once have they mentioned that tool.  We've even had techs that where having problems specifically because they couldn't log people out.   Go figure....

I remember a binary comparison tool I had used to get the password from a system. How I figured it out was that I was able to change a password as a maint1 log in but could not get into the installer account. Seeing the only change between to two I was able to manually change the binary digits next to it and restored the database and log into the installer.

I for some reason don't have that program and can't even remember it's name.

ps the database I was using was a Kermit back up too.

old thread but ill reply..

for 200s  i have used hexedit pro to gain access to systems where the previous service provider refused to give up the passcode

for installs.. I needed a way to identify analog extensions  (to make sure the right extension is in the right hotel room)..

one way was to build all the mailboxes as standard admins and they read back the extension when you dial voicemail..

I also built a mini asterisk machine that i carry around.. it reads the caller ID from where im calling, answers the line, reads back the extension number to me.. hangs up, waits 3 seconds then dials me back....

great so that way I can test in and outbound calling on every station I install..

the asterisk box is simply  a soekris with an FXO card in it connected to a CLASS port on the mitel...  works great..

I have even done it running asterisk virtually on my laptop and a linksys SPA-3102  connected to the mitel...

Chris!  Dude!!!
The Astrisk thingy is exactly what I've been wanting to do my self.   Don't know how to do it.
I've been wanting to set up a box specifically to read back caller ID and disconnect.
Can you share how you did it?

That Astrix box sounds sweet.  If you had a copy of the VM - I'd host it to share with folks......
