VM to Email suddenly stopped working. (All)
« on: March 07, 2014, 06:02:59 PM »
We have a Mitel 5000 set up to send emails when users get voicemails, just like many of you. Recently it suddenly stopped working without any changes being made to the Mitel system. No emails come out. Enhanced, forward and copy, welcome to voicemail to email, nothing. It's almost like the Exchange 2010 box is telling the Mitel to go away.

When I look at the logs to the Mitel VM it shows not attempts to connect to the exchange server. I'm at a loss. Our phone companies tech is at a loss. I've rebooted the Mitel system, the Exchange VM, checked every setting, put my computer on its subnet and can ping the server, server can ping the Mitel, all the basics.

The only thing that has changed at all is the introduction of Trend Micro's ScanMail. I would guess this is the reason for it, but it's not a firewall. Just a spam filter. All of the email domains that we have are set to allow as well. The windows firewall is on, but that shouldn't stop any Exchange traffic. The only thing on this VM is Exchange and now Trend. No other programs at all.

Help?!

Gr8twhtdope,

What does your mail log files say it is doing when a message is left in a mailbox set for Unified Messaging?

Thanks,

Steven

Not sure how I missed that there was a mail log. I've been looking at the voicemail logs.

I have a lot of weird things going on, not sure if they are normal or not.

Those publicIP is not even the public IP of the mail server. Its the public IP that we give to the controller, VPN and FTP. I guess I need to close up some ports, or is this normal to see?

Then there is 100s of these at the end of the log:

Gr8whtdope,

haha, I just figured out your name; nice. Anyway, now I can see what your problem is, but since I am not an Exchange Guru you may need to ask for help on how to do this. The problem that is shown is this 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender and it is usually due to some sort of relay setup gone wrong. This error message is generated by your Microsoft Exchange Server as the User Account does not have the necessary permissions to relay email. What I have in my notes on how to solve this is that you must grant Send As permissions to the User Account that was setup in the Email Gateway of the 5000 for its username as well as any other accounts that will be used to send mail from the 5000.

I did a quick search on Microsoft's site and found this for Exchange 2007 and it may be the same for 2010, but I don't know.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998291(EXCHG.80).aspx

Hopefully that sends you in the right direction to get your original issue resolved.

Now, as for your second problem that I see it looks as though someone from Taoyuan Taiwan [118.161.64.59] is using a Horde Server [198.38.92.89] and trying to use your Mitel 5000 as an SMTP relay to send mail. The good thing is that the Exim Daemon is not allowing it to happen, but you may want to look at your network security and shore it up some since I was able to find several locations that were having this same issue with the same email addresses 123@yahoo.com and sanjinn232@yahoo.com.tw.

Thanks,

TE

I use that name for everything. It's a reference to a Bloodhound Gang song.

I'll mess with Exchange, I still say that installing Trend blocked something it shouldn't have.

As far as ports go I have a ton open for the Mitel and all of the remote phones. Without all of them open it wouldn't work. Hmm.

Ports:
Quote
udp 67
udp 68
udp 69
udp 100
tcp 3998
tcp 3999
tcp 4000
tcp 5566
udp 5567
tcp 6800
tcp 6801
tcp 6802
udp 20001
tcp 44000

That is a lot. There is the normal 443 and 25 for exchange, a range of randoms for FTP and VPN. Thats it. There might be a range for Mitel, I'm to lazy at the moment to dig through the running config lol. I'll let you know about the Exchange mess.

Gr8whtd0pe,

I just spent like 10 min on looking at Trend Micro and this error, read not a Trend Micro expert,  and it looks as though this would come from the Anti-Spam E-Mail Reputation section of the Trend Micro service. I have found several answers, but since most people do not reply back after getting it working there is no definitive resolution for this that I have found. I would start with turning the service off by unchecking the Enable Real Time Anti-Spam and see if your problem clears up; not that we want to keep it that way. If it does then just contact Trend Micro for a resolution that will work for your scenario. Most of the solutions that I found started with changing the services from Advanced to Standard and then doing a Bypass as an action, but that looks like older posts and it may not have those settings anymore.

If Trend Micro does give you a solution that works would you please post it here so others may have a known solution. If it doesn't turn out to be the Trend Micro service, I highly doubt that, then after you turned off the above mentioned service repost your mail logs just to make sure you are getting the same problem.

Thanks,

TE

Our Mitel tech came by and took a shot at figuring it out. I rebooted the VM that has exchange after removing Trend's firewall. It started sending out emails then. Actually everything was working.

Was.

Now I am getting the emails from the server, but enhanced does not want to delete emails. If I erase the settings and set it back up for my extension I get the email again. If I delete it, it works fine. If I leave myself another message, I get the email, but the delete doesn't work. Again, clear out the settings, put the exact same ones in and it works again. GAH!

Got to be something with exchange screwing everything up. Just can't pinpoint what since nothing has changed.

Gr8whtd0pe,

Have you checked the mail logs to see if the system is logging any problems when you are doing this? I have not run into that particular problem before, but most likely the Trend Micro made some changes to the Exchange Server that were not changed back when you turned it off or removed it; hmm. I will have to think about this some more, but look at your logs in the meantime and see if they show any issues.

Thanks,

TE
