Mitel 5312 handset through a network hub?

Hi,

We have a scenario whereby only have 2 1gb LAN ports in an office and would like to have 3 Mitel 5312 handsets setup. I have a Mitel 3300 system onsite but wondered if its possible to have them going through a gigabit hub?

This would work, but I doubt that it would be a hub, more like a switch, especially if it is running gigabit. You would also need either power injectors or have a switch that has poe ports on board.

You may just have to statically set the vlan, but apart from that things should work.

Is there any reason why they need to be on gig ports given that the phones themselves only have 100 meg ports on board?

Thanks for the reply. The phones have the 1Gb base module upgrades on them so would like to utilize that on the gigabit network here. I do have a POE injector so will give it a try once i get hold of a switch.

Seems a bit of a waste having a Gb plinth on one of those handsets!

It's not officially supported but you can daisy chain another IP set off the PC port on the back of one, at least I've done it with 5212's. Only works for one set, and you need to use a power adapter for the 2nd phone.

I would suggest a PoE switch, small ones can be had for well under $100 on Newegg or other online retailer... we have been using this ZyXEL model with great success: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=33-181-163 and it is only $66 shipped, and if Gigabit is requires this one for $149 works well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181248

Not trying to be a sales person for ZyXEL, but we have tried lots of cheap, unmanaged PoE switches with lots of hit and miss issues, but I have never had an issue or bad port from a ZyXEL switch. We keep a half dozen of the 10/100 switches on the shelf all the time.
