Lightning Protection For Mitel 3300
« on: August 10, 2011, 08:45:33 AM »
We picked up a new customer that had a Norstar system that took lightning damage.
That got me to wondering so I'd like to start a discussion to get opinions as to what is the best lightning protection for a 3300.

Generally a good UPS will catch surges on the AC source, but what about the copper trunks and PRI trunks, etc.

How are you handling the protection of theses?

Also, do you consistently ground all controllers, ASU's, NSU's, etc?   And to what do you ground these to?   Or do you rely on the grounding on the AC power plug?

Always take all equipment and racks to a ground buss bar, a ups, and onsp cards in the asu's. We get a lot of lightning around here and yes it is a good revenue steam but with this method we have never lost a 3300 so far. We have lost some old ons cards but this is resolved now with onsp cards haven't lost a card since. As far as pri they should already be grounded if the telco installer knows what they are doing and they typically ground to their copper or to the buss bar as well. Use ground lugs on the Mitel systems to make a proper connection.
