Software update
« on: October 08, 2025, 01:17:56 PM »
I have a customer who acquired a used Mitel 250 with 6.3 sp4.  If the software gets upgraded to sp7 does a new license need to be generated since it’s already 6.3? Or can it just be upgraded?  Since this unit was a third party reseller there is no access to the licensing portal or software assurance for the last year they offer it.

oldwave,

Technically, no you don't need to upgrade the license to upgrade the system.

The issue you are going to have is that the license can be 'lost' during the upgrade process and you would need a copy of it.

The copy you would have to get from the VAR who owns the Licensing for that system OR you may be able to contact Mitel and get it transferred to you if you are a certified VAR.

Before you ask, no there isn't a way to download the license from the system, sorry.

Thanks,

TE

Thanks for the information, it’s been 10 years since my certification trading, and retired 7 years ago, though I maintain and installed my last one 4 years ago. I do have a decent Mitel partner, but I’m not sure Mitel will transfer the license.  If not I’ll leave it at sp4 and call it a day.
