Mitel 5505 phone - NTP, web configuration
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:45:14 AM »
Hi all, maybe you can help me. From the firewall logs I have noticed that our Mitel 5505 phone in the showroom is trying to access various public IP addresses like 81.27.195.164 (kamelot3.dkm.cz) or 195.140.254.217 (s1.web-systems.ws) on UDP port 123 (NTP) quite often. Obviously the phone is trying to synchronize its time over NTP. I tried to open the IP of the phone in a web browser (TCP port 80) and I got a login prompt asking for a username and password ("The server at 172.20.50.106 at Mitel Realm requires a username and password")

Does anybody have any idea what the username and password is?

Does anybody have any idea how to disable/change NTP client settings on the 5505 phone?

I have not found any help in the 5505 Administration Guide.
Thank you
Petr

The username and password is simple to guess, BTW.

I'm at a customer site with 5505 phones installed and the time on all the phones is about 2 hours in the past. I checked the settings on the ICP, the time and time zone and all is correct.

Then I logged on the phone's web interface and under Network Config there is Time Zone set to "+0", but the correct value should be "+2". Any ideas why is the phone not picking up the time zone up configuration from the ICP?

A 5505?!?! They are just dumb SIP devices right? They wouldn't get any of those settings from the ICP automatically, because they are just dumb SIP devices.

5505 are not as dumb as they look, they are getting some setup from the ICP somehow. I have a support ticked opened with Mitel support about the NTP issue.

Here it is how I found it works:

The 5505 phone's time zone is for sure controlled by the time zone settings in Network Zones that is associated with the phone. When the time zone is changed there, the ICP sends a NOTIFY SIP request to the phone with following message body:

<mideviceuserdata cleardata="No" language="ENGLISH" updateconfig="Yes" tftpserver="172.20.50.41" configfile="mn_476.cfg"/>\r\n

The phone then based on this request downloads the given config file (mn_476.cfg):

<Parameter Model="5505">
    <room_number>476</room_number>
    <handset_lancode>en_EN</handset_lancode>
    <pairing_pin>1234</pairing_pin>
    <tonecode>GB</tonecode>
    <time_zone>60</time_zone>
    <srtp>0</srtp>
</Parameter>

Then the phone reboots and applies the new time zone configuration.

Important note: If the ICP has configured a domain name then the NOTIFY SIP request contains the FQDN and this has to resolvable (PBX hostname +  domain name) by the DNS server configured for the phone. The phone gets the DNS server from the Option 6 (domain-name-servers) via DHCP. If the option is not set or is wrong TFTP config file download fails.

Uff, nobody was teaching us this stuff at school :-)

How do you access the web interface on the 5500?  We used to be able to do this but on the latest batch it does not work.  We were told by Mitel that DHCP option is the only way to get IP settings for the phone but the customer environment is all static, no DHCP, so we need to configure static settings.
