SIP trunking - card / license?
« on: April 18, 2018, 01:51:48 PM »
Hey guys,

We have a mitel 3300 and we're talking to different SIP trunk providers as we're looking to go SIP.

Is there a license aspect in the mitel 3300 that would need to be activated?  We have 200 DIDs that we're looking to transfer from our PRI to our SIP provider.

Also,  is there a physical card or unit that would need to be added on to our PBX to connect our PBX with the SIP provider?

Let me know

thanks :)

No physical card is required, but licensing is... It is licensed based on the number of SIP trunks, or concurrent call sessions, you would use. The actual number of DID numbers you have is not relevant.

Also, since the MiVB does not support NAT, you need a SIP Session Border Controller such as a Mitel Border Gateway, for most installations.

Most firewalls can handle this with built-in SIP ALG, but my experience with this is that ALGs are great when they work, and terrible when they don't. You will of course have a testing phase where you bring up your SIP trunk with a new number on it and make sure it works as expected, before burning your bridges and moving all your numbers over  :D

I'm speaking with salesmen from different companies and they're all telling me we need a SIP card for our PBX.

Can someone please confirm ( as it has been done already in this thread) that we do not need an additional module to be installed?

thanks!

You need an additional server to serve as your SIP gateway (also generically called an SBC) - an MBG server.

There is no SIP card or special interface for SIP trunking in the phone system itself, only licensing.

That said, as VinceWhirlwind and I have both said, a SIP Session Boarder Controller is often required depending on the situation, and the Mitel Border Gateway is a common recommendation (I recommend it as well).

Now, in some situations like my company's hosted SIP trunking service... We provide an Adtran Netvanta router, and it requires a static public IP and an internal IP in the voice VLAN, it *IS* the SBC and we require it due to encryption and security concerns. A separate SIP SBC like a Mitel Border Gateway is not needed in this type of scenario.

Really appreciate all your feedback :)

Our gateway router has a built-in SIP ALG, could that be the way to go?

If it works, yeah. As I alluded to, ALGs don't have a great reputation.

As Dogbreath said... it really depends on the router and your SIP carrier and how well they talk to each other.

For example, many people swear by SonicWall, but we have never seen on function correctly with our company's VoIP service, but it works on others (thus why we use Adtran), Fortigate seems fall in this category as well. Typical SOHO routers like Netgear, D-Link, Asus, TP-Link, and such with "SIP ALG" almost always fail to work as expected. Yet we have had good luck with SIP ALG in Watchguard and some Cisco routers/versions (but not other models/versions).

Again, I want to stress that a router with a "SIP ALG" is hit and miss at best, and the specific ones I noted above are from my experience and not a recommendation to use or avoid a certain product.

I might get an Adtran 908e to convert sip to PRI. Buying 23 sip trunk licenses might be higher. Mitel should allow a trade fro digital link to sip IMHO.
