3300ICP/MBG SIP Trunk
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:23:38 AM »
I'm looking to get some SIP trunks for my 3300 but i have no experience with SIP.
I have a 3300 on version 4.1 SP1(10.1.1.11_2). I also have a Mitel Border Gateway server on version 5.2.17.0. My firewall is running Checkpoint R70.

Can someone give me a broad overview of how i will set these SIP trunks up? I'm really not sure if or how I use MBG in the configuration.
I was looking at bandwidth.com for my SIP trunks but I'm open to other suggestions.

We use/have resold the Bandwidth.com service. Really have no complaints with it.

The only thing with SIP trunks is that the better internet connection you have, the better it will sound/work. In a typical Bandwidth.com setup, you won't need to use the MBG server at all. As part of your service with them, they will supply you with a SIP aware firewall/router (Typically a Edgewater brand router). They will configure the Edgewater for you, for both QoS over the internet and redundancy to their servers. Then you simply have to plug it in ahead of any other data routers or firewalls that you have, and program the Mitel to talk to the inside address of the Edgewater.

- This config will then only cost you SIP trunk licenses on the 3300, and not the additional SIP trunk licenses that the MBG server requires.

Is there a way to do it with the equipment i have? Do i really require an additional SIP aware firewall/router?

I have a 20/20 internet connection. I'm only looking to get 2 trunks to start with for testing.

Technically yes. I've never tried to do it with Bandwidth.com though.

I have used the MBG server and a remote Mediatrix FXO to bring analog trunks into a system as SIP trunks. But there is no QoS because the SIP traffic has no priority over the rest of the data traffic.

I've done it with Bandwidth.com.   We used a "Siperator" that they provided and maintained.   The beauty was, they dialed in and set up the Siperator and I just sat back and watched it all happen.

We've also done it with a MBG - once -
Perhaps v2win can jump in on this conversation.  He's the tech that did it.   I understand it wasn't that simple.   But that's why they keep us around.

The MBG kind of works like the siperator. It has 2 interfaces one on the internal network with the 3300 and the other exposed to the internet. In my configuration with XO the router they brought in had 2 ethernet ports one for SIP and one for Internet traffic.

My simple drawing
3300                                         MBG                         Router
192.168.1.10             192.168.1.1        1.2.3.4              1.2.3.1

The default gateway for the 3300 is set to the MBG for internet and a route added for the local data networks.

It wasnt too bad there is a configuration document on MOL that basicall walks you through the configuration but it is missing one important step.

The default port for SIP is 5060 on the 3300 and on the MBG for phones its 5060 but for trunks its something else I think 5064 I had to have Mitel go in and change it.

Also you have to buy trunks on both the MBG and 3300 for this to work.
This wasnt documented in the guide.
