5201 IP Phone configuration
« on: November 07, 2008, 02:12:13 PM »
Can someone provide me some help in setting up a 5201 IP Phone.

Here is what I tried:

- Added a new User
- Set Device Type to 5201 IP
- Set the Mac Address to the phones MAC.

Not sure what is missing I could not find any documents that shows the required steps.

There is no dial tone on the phone when the handset is picked up.

I have configured several 5212 IP phones by following the same steps. So the DHCP server that I am using works for these phones.

What type of switch are you using?  Can  you tell if the phone is powered?  If it is a manageable switch you should be able to look at the mac address and/or arp tables to see if the phone is getting an address . . .

  Just a thought...

Do you have a solid MWI light on it?

The MWI light is flashing.

From the DHCP Lease Viewer I see the device's MAC address with an assigned IP address. The lease type is "Config Reserved".

Have you tried rebuilding the user and this time wait for the MWI to go solid and then you the set registration code to register the phone and the look in user config to see if you have the MAC there. You may have been off by a character or something. I know I will look at numbers sometimes and think they are the same just because I assume since I entered it that it must be right.
It may not make a differnce but it may help you out.

I deleted the user from the 3300. I have also plugged in a second 5201 phone that has never been provisioned.

On both phones the MWI blinks and both show up as "Config Reserved" as the lease type from the DHCP Lease Viewer. All other devices show up as "Dynamic" as the lease type.

config reserved means that the Mitel DHCP server issues the phone an IP address, however the phone did not respond.  if the firmware is older in your 5201's make sure you do the OLD way of setting up the DHCP server using the separate options 128-130, as opposed to the DHCP option 43 / 125 way...  I have found more than one case of a 5201 sitting on the shelf with very old firmware in it so it wont recognize the newer DHCP scheme until it boots all the way up and downloads its firmware from the PBX...

Thanks...

Setting up the Old DHCP settings did the trick.

Great - thanks for letting us know what fixed it up for you - and for teaching us what DHCP problems look like on a 5201!
