T.38 Faxing
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:24:45 PM »
Has anyone tried out the T.38 faxing yet? I am having a hard time getting it to work properly (so is tech support though). Just wanted to see if anyone out there has taken this on yet.

Not a good sign.
We have a couple of customers asking for it.
Please keep us posted on how things work out.

I'm very interested in this but haven't done it yet.  So far we have used MultiTech MVP130 type widgets to get analog over the IP network with pretty good success.  T.38 looks like good stuff though!

Ok, update time. This doesn't work quite as well as Mitel might make it seem in my opinion. I am seeing a success rate anywhere from 66% to 90% (daily). I wasn't able to find much documentation on this outside of the 9.0 self-study update course online, with good reason, there isn't anything out there. It took roughly three weeks for tech support to get the config right on this for my site, which is fairly straight forward.

The main thing that needs to be documented is that you cannot use fax profile 1, or compression zone 1. If you do so then the system will never go into T.38 mode.

As of right now, don't get it. Find another way to implement FOIP, at least until Mitel gets it together and stops charging to this commonly free feature.

I will post another update if things change with my success rates.

New update,

Mitel has dedicated a few members of their design team to this issue now, appearantly it doesn't work in the real world after all.

Will, post an update again when the status changes.

Mitel has been able to recreate a 90% failure rate in their lab! They seem to think that the Network Synchronization form is to blame. I get an update about once a week from these guys so I guess I will post something again next week.

Just a word of advice, I would not install this anytime soon.

They are visiting my site on Monday and Tuesday and another dealer's site in the area for a few days after that.

All I can get out of them is that they are working on it.

Hopefully they will have more for me after the site visit.

Latest update:
Mitel design has a few logs that were pulled out of the other site here locally that is having the same issue and is currently going through them to see what the issue could be.

I will post again if/when something comes of this.

Thanks for the updates - T.38 is important and we need to know if Mitel's implementation works.  Are there any mitigating factors in your problem install that make it unique?

I think that my situtation is about as basic as it can get.
Cluster of 10 3300s that has its own network setup, with a single fax at each site that are DIDs on PRIs on a 3300 at the Main Office for the customer.

Nothing there to screw things up other than the new DSPII.

Mitel swears that they have a full load release based on 9.0 UR1 that should make this function properly. I was told that they would have it to me late last week but still no sign, maybe this week or next?

I should have another update (hopefully one saying it works great) soon.

Finally!! Mitel seems to have come up with a fix for whatever was wrong in the previous release. I have been running the new software for about three weeks now and have had no complaints from the end user (I was getting several a day). The 9.0 UR2 load should work just fine.

Thanks for the update.
We have a major customer wanting to go to T.38 but I've been trying to get an answer to the question is modems will work if T.38 is active on the network.   So far no one can seem to say yes or no.   My experience so far is that T.38 breaks modems.
