What's your favorite method for programming unused DID's, if any at all?

Normally I don't do anything with them.
There have been times though, that I programmed the system to intercept vacant numbers to route to the front desk or a VM that says "You've reached a non-working number".

Over here you get a announcement that the number is not in service or a NU tone from provider

The old 3100 using imagination call control put you a programmed backstop number which was system wide for any problems like this. Not a bad idea really. (same as Ralph's second suggestion to all intents and purposes.

I'll usually set an intercept on the trunk and route all unused numbers to a reception number or something similar.

We normally program all DIDs and point the unused ones to the main company greeting.

I usually setup a vm announcement, makes it easy to see what is available if using the DID table
