Question for our VMWare wizzards
« on: February 08, 2016, 08:46:33 AM »
I need to convert a physical linux system to a virtual.
I know there is conversion software for it but where can I find it.
My level of access on VMWare doesn't allow me to DL it.
Is there a cost for this?

non-msl I presume?

Why not just backup and restore? Install a fresh version of your linux OS under vmware and restore from your physical's backup?

Good question.  The answer is simple:  I don't think I know how.
Yes, non-MSL.  Ubuntu.
Using it for a FTP server for multiple system backups.

Would it be possible to spin up a new instance with a new IP, then restore directly from the old physical box to it?
Or would I have to use some type of intermediary media?

I think what you are looking for is the P2V converter - http://www.vmware.com/au/products/converter
Has always been free, so all you should need is a vmware account to be able to download it.
