DHCP Options

Hi,

Just need  some help on this.

We have a customer that have got DHCP enabled on the MiVoice Office 250 however they want to turn DHCP OFF on the phone system and want all their phones to use their  other DHCP server. Basically they only have one network but with 2 DHCP servers which is not ideal and I am not sure why it was set up this way. Just to give a brief overview, the Mitel 250 IP is 10.0.0.150 and the IP range of its DHCP is from 10.0.0.151 - 10.0.0.198 so all phones IP are in that range. Their router's IP range ends at 10.0.0.149 and I am thinking this needs to be expanded to cater for the phones.

What would be the easiest way to move the phones to the new DHCP server without causing too much hassle and what would be the required DHCP options that need to be set up on that DHCP server in order for the phones to work properly. Please note that all the phones are Mitel 5300 series phones (no 6900 phones)

Appreciate any help on this.

Just add option 43 to the DHCP server, disable DHCP in the MiVO, and reboot the phones... The only time we ever use the DHCP server in the MiVO is if it's on a dedicated VLAN.

Assuming no dedicated voice VLAN...

Option 43 - Vendor Specific ASCII Text option
id:ipphone.mitel.com;sw_tftp=10.0.0.10;call_srv=10.0.0.10;dscp=56

Substitute the IP address of the phone system for "10.0.0.10" as needed in your network.

All Mitel 5300 series phones work with Option 43, you only need option 43 which is ASCII text -OR- option 125 which is an encoded/encapsulated option... Either is fine, but 43 is much easier to setup and supported on most routers, whereas some routers can't do option 125. Options 128-133 have been deprecated for some time, well over 10 years, but might be required for some odd devices like older 5200 series phones or the 5485 page module (which isn't supported in the MiVO anyway).

Basically, the phones just need a valid option to give it the address for the call server (phone system), the tftp server (usually the phone system, but in some very large Mitel installation maybe an external server, like 1000's of phones in a MiVoice Business environment), and in some cases options for vlan, vlan priority, and dscp... They don't need multiple options to give them the same information.
